The German law only allows two kinds of waste treatment, namely waste incineration and mechanical- biological waste treatment (MBT). The latter produces a high calorific material that is used energetically as secondary or refuse-derived-fuel (RDF).
Within the different kinds of MBTs Neumünster MBT focuses on stabilising the input of household and bulk waste in order to produce as much RDF as possible. The purpose of the biological procedure within the process is to dry the material. In the end only 6 % of the original input of Neumünster’s MBT is landfilled.
